The KZN MTB Commission is a volunteer organisation established in terms of the constitution of Cycling KZN and is a subsidiary of Cycling KZN. Cycling SA reports to the Department of Sport and as such is accountable to the government of South Africa.
The KZN MTB Commission comprises a number of commissioners that strive to administer the sport in the province in a responsible and professional way. Our primary goal is to manage mountain biking in KZN in accordance with the rules and regulations that have been developed over time, while promoting and adding value wherever possible.
The ethos of the Commission is embodied in the slogan: “Sport run by people with passion that promote environmentally sound and socially responsible mountain biking” and the practical working of this can be seen in the continuous improvements that are made every year.
The KZN MTB Commission is legally a “volunteer organisation” which does not make a profit. All revenues collected are used for the management and development of the sport in KZN and to assist rider development. The finances are managed by the elected Treasurer and overseen transparently by the Commission at quarterly meetings. All transactions are processed on an accounting package through an independent bookkeeper and the financials are audited annually by a certified accountant. All records are open to inspection.
Mountain Bike has a number of different elements that are linked to the sport, these being as follows:
Cross-country is part of the Olympic programme and Cross-country races are held over undulating circuits (with technical descents, forest roads, rocky paths and obstacles) of 4 to 6 km in length. The race varies from 1 h 20 minutes to 1 h 40 minutes depending on the category.
The Cross-country marathon events are a long version of cross-country held over a course of 60 to 160 km. A special feature is that rides from all categories, from enthusiasts to professionals, race together. The marathon is traditionally held in a mountainous region.
The Cross-country eliminator event must be between 500m and 1000m. It’s is a fast-moving, dynamic, action-packed format in which four riders race in heats on technical tracks featuring obstacles such as jumps and bridges. Competitions begin with a qualifying heat that takes the form of an individual timed lap of the circuit, as a result of which the fastest 32 men and 16 women qualify for the main competition. The fastest two riders in each heat thereafter qualify for the next round, with the format continuing until only four riders remain to contest the final.
Although the gravity component of mountain biking falls under the broad umbrella of the mountain bike discipline, due to its specific nature, there is a Gravity Commission that forms part of KZN Cycling and that manages and controls this aspect of the sport.
This is a multifaceted and dynamic cycling discipline! It combines the physical endurance of cross-country mountain bike riding with the excitement and technical difficulty of downhill mountain bike racing. … Today, enduro races have three to six timed stages.
This is a genre of mountain biking practiced on steep, rough terrain that often features jumps, drops, rock gardens and other obstacles. Downhill bikes are heavier and stronger than other mountain bikes and feature front and rear suspension with over 8 inches (20 cm) of travel, to glide quickly over rocks and tree roots. In competitive races, a continuous course is defined on each side by a strip of tape. Depending on the format, riders have a single or double attempt to reach the finish line as fast as possible, while remaining between the two tapes designating the course. Riders must choose their line by compromising between the shortest possible line and the line that can be travelled at the highest speed. If a rider leaves the course by crossing or breaking the tape they must return to the course at the point of exit, unless they do not gain a time advantage from crossing the tape, in which case they can continue with their run.
Riders start at intervals, often seeded from slowest to fastest, and courses typically take two to five minutes to complete with winning margins being often less than a second. Riders are timed with equipment similar to that used in downhill skiing.
