KZN Cycling Schools Road Series – Rules

General Rules & Regulations

The following rules and regulations are allied to the participation criteria for the KZN Cycling Schools Road Series and are to be viewed in conjunction with the general series information.

It must be noted that all standard rules and regulations applicable for road cycling events staged under the auspices of Cycling South Africa will apply, and these regulations do not supersede these existing rules.

  1. Participation in the series events is open to both male and female riders 
  2. Riders from the age of 10 years old may take part in the series final
  3. The maximum age for participation in the final is 18 years of age
  4. Participants may compete using any form of recognised bicycle save for E-bikes
  5. The series final will have category prize winners in each distance – these being road bikes and mountain bikes
  6. The top three finishers in each category and in each age group will be acknowledged
  7. Riders may take part in as many of the qualifying events in the series as they chose, but will need to take part in at least one of the series events in order to be considered for the series final
  8. Twenty five riders per age category (per gender) from each of the series qualifying events will qualify to take part in the series final
  9. Rider’s qualification will count from one event only
  10. Should a rider not take part in one of the qualifying events but still wish to take part in the aQuellé Tour Durban, they may do so as a standard entrant but will not be permitted to take part in the series final race.
  11. Should a rider have already qualified for the final at any previous event, but still place in the top twenty five of the additional qualification events, their place in the series final will be given to the next rider on the results lists
  12. The series final will be staged at the aQuellé Tour Durban and the respective distances for each age category will be as follows:
  13. U13: 28km
  14. U15: 42km
  15. U18: 68km
  16. Each of these racing groups will accommodate a maximum of 100 x riders (per gender) at the series final
  17. The 200 qualified riders per distance start in their own batch and will have a race commissaire and attendant race security measures
  18. No riders taking part in the event may integrate themselves in the racing group nor may a rider be assisted in any way by any rider not in their racing group
  19. Riders should take part in the race distance closest to their series final race category when they take part in the various qualifying events
  20. If a rider does not qualify for the series final in their category, they may still take part in the series final in the school’s participation competition – this competition being for schools that enter the most riders in the event
  21. Should a rider take part in a qualifying event in 2025 and qualifies for the final but then leaves school at the end of the year, they may still take part in the final in a designated “old boys and girls” category
  22. The entry fees for each qualifying event will be as per the rules of each of the events in the series and entry will be managed as per the regulations of each of these events
  23. Entry into the aQuellé Tour Durban for the series final will be done through the event entry system and a special schools final entry fee will apply for all qualified riders with this fee being set at R400 per entrant regardless of the distance they are competing in

3 Weeks to Go – WOA IQembu Cycle Challenge 2025

We’re counting down to Durban’s best team cycle event – the WOA IQembu Cycle Challenge, happening Sunday, 31 August 2025! Expect warm weather, flat roads, and a buzzing cycling atmosphere. Start time: 7:00am Distances & Team Sizes: • 100km TTT – Up to 10 riders (minimum 5 to finish) • 60km Challenge – Up to 6 riders (minimum 4 to finish) • 40km Challenge – Up to 4 riders (minimum 3 to finish) Prize Money: R50 000 for the winning 100km team Bikes: Road, TT, MTB, and gravel bikes welcome Course: Almost dead-flat with smooth road surfaces – perfect for fast racing or social riding Race Rules & Safety: To ensure a safe, fair event No drafting behind other teams Maintain a 20 bike length gap when overtaken Dropped riders must ride solo or withdraw – no rejoining teams Always keep left, pass right, then return left Marshals will be on course, and teams may report rule violations. The focus is on fairness, safety, and enjoyment for all.
